Life Update and Finishing University

As some of you may know (after reading my constant moaning about dissertation work), I have now completed my undergraduate degree at Sussex University! It's been a hectic few days; on Friday, I travelled straight from Gatwick airport to campus to pick up my final year results. Being extremely tired from the flight and ten days of monkeying around in Greece (see more on Friday), it hasn't all quite sunk in yet. I HAVE A BLOODY DEGREE!

Three years of blood, sweat, and (many) tears has led to my looming graduation. There have been times where I have been incredibly close to dropping out and giving up altogether; family illnesses, traumas and depression very nearly overshadowed my time at uni. Everything in my life over the past few years seemed totally out of control, to the point where countless anti-depressants and counselling sessions couldn't rouse me from my murky state. Thankfully, I managed to channel these feelings of despair into something I knew I could control; my university work.

I won't go into details about the miseries I've had to entail since I've entered adulthood, but I'll just say that it has been tough. Like, real tough. But this isn't a 'boo hoo, poor Sophie' post. It's the opposite. When I found my candidate number on the results list, sitting smugly under the 'First' column, I burst into tears.

I AM GRADUATING WITH A FIRST IN HISTORY!

My baby aka history dissertation

It feels like a dream. It was always my ultimate goal, but given the (bad) whirlwind lifestyle I had thrust upon me, it always felt to be slipping further and further away. So, this post is not only a post to share my good news, but also a little memento to say you can do it! Even if you're having the shittiest time in the world, even if depression is keeping you practically bed-ridden and anchored in thoughts of harming yourself because 'you'll never be good enough', those dreams in the back of your mind? Keep hold of them. With both hands. They are attainable, and it is so important to have something to aim for.

I'm still astounded about the results, but I'm so glad all the hard work has paid off. It is so true that good things come to those who work their arses off for it! On top of this, the next day (Saturday), I trudged along to a job interview after countless recent rejections. Half an hour later, I received a phone call. I GOT THE JOB!

Obviously, all my good luck has come at once, but I'm not complaining. Not only do I have a BA History (1st) after my name, I also have summer work so, YAY I CAN NOW PAY THE RENT! I hope this can be a new chapter in my life, as I look forward to starting a law conversion in September. This has turned into a rambly diary-entry style post (I apologise!), but I just thought a quick life update would give you an insight into the human behind this website.

Work hard for your dreams- it's the only way to ensure you achieve them.  Never let depression stand in your way; you are far, far better than your illness. Now, where's that celebratory glass of champagne?....

  8. I had this tab open for a while now, so when I refreshed it, I was confused by how different your blog looked LOL (hooray for the new layout!)
CONGRATS ON FINISHING UNIVERSITY (with a first in History? Not sure we have that concept here, but ay, 'first' in anything deserves applause)!! That is definitely one dissertation I'd be interested in reading, and hooray for law in Sept? (Christ, I feel like people need a proper break after uni before starting more education but that's JUST ME)

    1. Thank you! Yeah, this site is long overdue a little makeover! I know....I feel like I should've taken a year out in between history and law but oh well! I'd send you the dissertation if you want but it's a bit of a long read ;) Thanks for your comment x
