Ah, the beauty world. So full of wonderful things, so full of hypes. Being someone who is constantly critical and wary of make-up hypes, I try to test out products with an open mind in order to answer the real question: is it worth the money, and is it worth all this overly exaggerated chit-chat? Some products genuinely are; I absolutely adored Benefit's Roller Lash, and have grown to love other cult classics such as Collection's Lasting Perfection concealer. Unfortunately, others do not fit that bill.
MAC is a brand known for its lipsticks- I challenge you to find me a beauty blogger who has not listed their top 3 MAC lipsticks or given you an insight into their 'collection'. They are precious, magical bullets of colour, and, rumour has it, they have changed people's lives. MAC has turned everyday lives from sepia to full of technicolour, with pops of Russian Red everywhere! Their celebrity and limited edition collections are swooned over by thousands, despite them being the exact same, boring neutral shades as the last 'special collection'. MAC has a special hold over beauty enthusiasts. Am I not a proper beauty blogger then, because I caved in and bought a MAC lipstick, and just felt, well, MEH.
Having swatched a couple in-store, I found the classic Ruby Woo was far too matte and drying for me, so I picked up 'Brave Red' from their Cremesheen range. It's a gorgeous red colour which sits great on your lips- no drying and just the right hint of moisture- and it is a joy to wear. However, it is no better than other highstreet red lipsticks I've tried. In fact, I have Rimmel red lippies that are just as gorgeous as MAC's Brave Red, just as comfortable to wear,, and provides just as great longevity. The only major difference would be the price tag.
I'm not saying I hate MAC- I actually really like this lipstick-, I'm just saying that the brand has been ridiculously overhyped to the point where they start to get on my nerves. It's only marginally better than some of the classic reds you can find in Superdrug, and provides no overall 'wow factor' that'll make you buy those sleek black bullets over and over again. There are so many other lipsticks out there which are just as great; MAC lipsticks are nice, but they are not worth £15 or so. They are just that- average, standard, nothing extraordinary...just 'nice'.
What do you think of MAC? Worth the hype, or just a money-making bullet of averageness?
I own 5 MAC lipsticks, 2 of which were presents and the rest were little treats to myself. The one thing I do love about them is their huge selection of colours and finishes.I really enjoy the few that I have (I always feel a bit 'fancy' pulling a more expensive lipstick from my handbag! haha) but like you I don't understand why people feel the need to have every shade in existence when you can dupe a lot of them with 'drugstore' brands. I don't pay any attention really to their 'collections' either. Em x

Very true about the colour variety, but I do find quite a few of the shades are basically the same. It's a great place to go if you have a specific or unusual colour in mind x
DeleteI like MAC lipsticks simply because of the colour choice, and because they feel like a little treat! I have colours like Heroine and Cyber though, which would be difficult to find at the drugstore. I don't think they're much better than other lipsticks (some of them are actually terrible) but I tend to buy them at duty free and with 20% off they're not much more expensive than a drugstore lipstick and you get the pretty matching packaging :P

Good point about duty free! I missed a trick there when I went on holiday x
DeleteI totally agree! I find MAC Lipsticks a bit overrated especially when I love the Kiko ones that are half the price. They are, however, very good for giveaways because people seem to love them XD

Definitely! Glad you agree. I don't understand the lure of MAC xx
DeleteI have never bought a MAC product, and their lipsticks don't appeal to me, as I rarely wear lippy! Their shade ranges seem terrible re bases, and their prices are so high!x
ReplyDeletePs can we also talk about the stupid, boring limited edition ranges?
DeleteThere are far better lipsticks out there. I know, they are so dull aren't they? It's the same old stuff in new shiny packaging x
DeleteI totally agree, I've bought one MAC lipstick and was really excited but nope, it's just an ordinary lipstick. Give me another Revlon any day!

So glad you agree! I think the name has more allure than the actual lipsticks x
