NEW! Rimmel Apocalips Matte Lip Velvet

I rarely get super excited about new lipstick launches on the high-street. This all changed when I walked into Superdrug this week and found that not only did Rimmel have a new Apocalips range out, but it was on a 'buy one get one half price' offer! Woohoo! I, like many others, fell instantly in love with the original Apocalips collection (you can read my review here), so I had very high hopes for this new matte range.

Matte lip lacquers aren't usually the first I reach for. I find them quite drying on my lips, and notice that they don't particularly last long. My hopes were lifted with the recent MUA luxe lip lacquers, but ended up fairly underwhelmed by them (a tale for another day). It seems most high street brands haven't mastered the art of creating the perfect matte formula. Are Rimmel the first to crack the code?

Let me start with the packaging. They have stuck with the original packaging, only covering the bottle in a matte black to keep with the theme of the product. As you may know, I loved the original Apocalips bottle so I'm glad they stuck with this. The wand hasn't changed either, allowing an ease of application that makes these lip lacquers one of my firm favourites.

The formula of these beauties is surprisingly lovely. I'm used to matte lip lacquers having a really strange consistency; a thick, heavy feel which dries and cracks really easily. These matte Apocalips, however, don't seem to feel the same. Gliding onto the lips with ease, the formula doesn't feel drying or flaky, and actually takes a bit of time to fully 'dry'.

Rimmel Apocalips Matte Atomic Rose

It doesn't sit awkwardly on the lips, like many other mattes might, and I love that it still has that silky feel of a lipgloss. It's my favourite matte lip product by far, and I really value the fact that it doesn't feel as though it's taking all the moisture out of your lips.

Rimmel Apocalips Matte Orange-Ology

These only come in four different colours in store (5 online for some reason). This is a lot fewer than its glossy sister, but I'm sure once these become a real beauty favourite Rimmel will release more shades. At the moment, Apocalips matte lip velvet is available in Atomic Rose (pale, nude-ish pink), Orange-Ology (a bright coral), Meteoric Matte (a deep purple), Burning Lava (a bright red), and Apollo (nude).

The Rimmel Apocalips Matte Lip Velvet lacquers are available online and in a range of stores for £6.49 each.

What do you think of this new range?

  4. ATOMIC ROSE IS GORGEOUS (on you...actually, both are gorgeous on you). I haven't yet tried the original Apocalips, but I did hear issues of it not setting and it smearing, so that was a bit of mess for some people. If one day I can fully commit to sporting an opaque matte lipstick, I'll be sure to check out this range first!

  6. These look amazing, I love the pinky shade! I didn't love the original range because it just doesn't set and it goes all over my face and I prefer mattes anyway, so this is for me!

    1. These are definitely a happy medium- not as glossy as the original but not as drying as most other mattes :)

  7. These look so pretty! I'm not a fan of the original formula, because there very slick and just don't sit right. However these look much drier and like they would stay put on the lips! I hope these comes to Canada!

  10. I just got Orange-ology and Meteoric Matte, but I feel like these are a bit of a let-down. I've never had a lip product feather on me before, but these did really badly after about 30 mins wear time. But I do love the colour of Orange-ology, and it looks lovely on you! Xx
