The Best Low-Maintenance Hair Style: Balayage at Shine Hair, Brighton

Last week, I made good use of a day off work by taking a much-needed visit to the hairdressers. The semi-permanent colour in my hair had very much faded, leaving a mish-mash of shades which just looked a bit naff. Coupled with my split ends that desperately needed chopping off, I popped into town to Shine Hair & Beauty in the centre of Brighton town to have a little bit of a pamper. My hair was done by the lovely Courtney, a developing stylist at the Aveda salon, and I opted for a balayage. I  have had this done before but the colour didn't go very blonde and was very warm toned but it's such a low maintenance hair style that I thought I'd try it again. Courtney was absolutely incredible and gave me exactly what I wanted; a lovely blonde colour, natural and subtle look and a style that is so easy to keep up.

What I love most about balayage is that there are no roots that constantly need topping up and maintaining, as you do with highlights. No unsightly regrowth that creates harsh contrast between colours, just highlights that weave throughout your natural colour, creates depth of tone and blends seamlessly with your roots. Plus it's bang on trend- I can see why so many people are opting for this style...I for one can't afford to keep going back for colour refreshers every 6 weeks and am so lazy with my hair so it really is ideal. From arriving at the salon, to perfecting the finishing curls, I was at the salon for between 2 and 3 hours (nearing 3), but this did include a cut too.

When I arrived at Shine, I was offered a complimentary massage and had the choice of two Aveda oils- relaxing or energising. I opted for energising, although both smelt absolutely amazing. It was the perfect way to relax into a pamper session (especially as I don't treat myself very often!) and such a lovely little extra touch that made me fall in love with the salon. The salon itself has an awesome interior design- very rustic and stoney but still feeling warm and trendy. All of the staff there seem so lovely, and Courtney in particular was so patient, chatty and kind. I'd definitely recommend going to see her! After the colour had been applied and had been on my hair a while, it was time to wash out. There's obviously not much to say about this part, but I do have to mention that the chairs by the basins are recliner and have a back massager in-built...it was heaven! When the massage came to an end I scrambled for the remote to turn it back on again. Another lovely little addition that makes the place stand out! I also have to mention Alma, the salon dog, who made her way around each client for a little fuss. She was so sweet and well-behaved...anywhere with a dog gets a thumbs up from me!

Overall, I am so impressed with this salon. I've been to a few in Brighton now but none have gotten the colour exactly how I want it, nor won me over as a returning client. However, I will 100% be heading back to Shine. From the salon itself, Alma and the quality of hairdressing the lovely staff provide, it ticked every box for me. I love the colour and cut of my hair and I get the impression that this is a salon where the hairdressers really listen to what you want and strive to deliver exactly that. Their attention to detail really drew me in too. It's located on Gloucester Road which is right in the heart of the North Laines so really easy to find. They offer 10% off for students from Monday to Friday and are also running a promotion at the moment where balayage, highlights and a cut and blow-dry have a whopping 70% off if you have your hair done by one of the developing stylists. I think my balayage, cut, blow dry and finish cost just under £45 in total (balayage alone would have been just under £30). This is such an amazing offer, especially as most salons will charge nearer to £100. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a fab hairdresser in Brighton- high quality and (for once, in Brighton) totally affordable!

  1. That looks so lovely, they did a great job. In Brighton I go to Japonica in Preston Circus. It's a lovely little salon with a great, creative team.
