All About That Base: Real Techniques Core Collection Brushes

We're often told within the world of beauty that your skincare and base is the most important part of your makeup routine. Without these, you have nothing to build upon. Having a perfect base enables you to craft your look however you want, whether it be adding depth through highlighting, or creating definition through contouring. I'm a big fan of using brushes to create this flawless base; after using a foundation brush for a couple of years I would never go back to applying with my fingers or a sponge. I'm also a big believer in investing in good quality brushes to ensure your base makeup is the best it can be, and these Real Techniques brushes are a fantastic collection to get you started.

Pointed Foundation Brush: This brush is quite a lot smaller than the flat foundation brush which I usually use, but it is great for precision. Perfect for use with liquid foundations, the bristles are soft enough to buff the product into the skin, but doesn't absorb too much of the formula. This is great for creating an even foundation base, and even better for controlling the amount of coverage you want from your foundation.

Buffing Brush: While RealTechniques (and creators, Sam and Nic Chapman AKA Pixiwoo) suggests to use this brush for a full coverage application of powder and mineral foundations, I find this is fantastic for buffing liquid foundation into the skin, after applying it with a flat foundation brush. The larger, flat surface area on the top of the brush means it's great for really blending the foundation into your skin, creating a seamless, airbrushed look.

Detailer Brush: With its harder bristles and smaller head, this little brush can be used to apply and blend concealer or to precisely apply lipstick. I have only tried this with concealer so far; it's amazing for precisely covering blemishes and neatening up eyebrow makeup to create the so-called Instagram power-brow. I do find this isn't so great for blending concealer under the eyes; for such a delicate area you definitely need a softer tool. Still, a handy little brush to have.

Contour Brush: Personally, I have never really dabbled in full-on contouring. I usually make my face a bit more 3D through some blush and highlighter, and find that this is good enough for a natural day-time look. I am really loving this brush for applying highlighter; it's super-soft and the perfect shape and size for sweeping a bit of highlighter onto the cheekbones. For me, it's a little bit too small for blush (the only brush I believe is missing from this collection), but it's all down to personal preference.

Not only are these brushes quite gorgeous to look at (although not as pretty as the rose gold collections which are just ~dreamy~), but they provide everything you need to sculpt your makeup base. There's a brush to suit your specific foundation needs (from mineral powder to liquid), and are great for building up your desired level of coverage. It even comes with a little case and stand which is really handy for when you're travelling. Overall, this is a great collection if you want to invest in a few good quality staple brushes that'll enhance your make-up.

What do you think of Real Techniques brushes? Good quality or over-hyped and over-priced?

Disclaimer: These brushes were sent to me as part of a collaboration with InPost a couple of months ago, however, as always, this has not impacted on my opinions.

  1. I actually mainly use the detail brush for applying a highlight colour to the inner corners of my eyes! But then again, I usually just blend my concealer with my fingers, so I don't need it for that.

I love the contour brush both for a cream contour under my cheekbones and for highlighter. Those are my two most used ones out of this set, but all the Real Techniques brushes are so good!

    1. Oooh, I haven't used the detailer brush for highlighter- that's a really good idea!
