A Musical Adventure: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Last Saturday, my darling mother and I took a trip to the sunny capital to see a show at the theatre. It was a beautiful day full of sunshine (and screeching school children on their Easter holidays), and despite the delayed train journey into London, we were incredibly excited to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

A theatre visit was part of my 21st birthday present, and after hearing about how amazing the show was from my housemate/friend/gin partner Aarun, my Mum and I knew this was the show we needed to go and see. For my 18th, we went to see Matilda (the first musical I ever watched), and we were pretty sure nothing would ever be able to top it. Well, little Charlie Buckett definitely gave it a run for its money; it was just as good, if not better!

The start of a long train journey...

The show was so creatively constructed, and 'oohs' and 'ahhs' resonated from the audience as Willy Wonka's chocolate factory came to life on stage. It definitely had the 'awe' factor; each scene provided an imaginative way to portray a combination of Roald Dahl's book and Tim Burton's 2005 film adaptation. From seeing Augustus Gloop squeezing through a mechanical tube, to a laboratory full of nut-sorting squirrels, the show packs in everything you'd want from the magical kid's story and more.

Alex Jennings as Willy Wonka is just the most perfect casting, and injects some needed hilarity into the show, alongside "mummy water"-drinking suburban housewife Mrs Teavee, played by Josefina Gabrielle. Together, these two provide the more 'adult' jokes; the ones that leave children puzzled as to why their parents are chuckling beside them. This makes the musical a fantastic watch for kids and adults alike- I came away feeling like a big kid after being transported back to my childhood and completely losing myself in the imagination of the show!

Theat-arr selfies, dahhrrling.

We watched the show from the luxury of our box; we assumed we'd be sharing with some random people but were delighted to find we had the space all to ourselves! The view of the stage was incredible, and we felt even more like royalty when we noticed our VIP area had our own little coat hooks! Trust me, you will never see two adults get as excited over some hooks as we did.

(Apologies for the poor quality of the photos above- dark lighting and crappy flash don't go well together.) After bathing ourselves in the wondrous childhood adventures of Charlie Buckett, we strolled around central London for a bit before grabbing a bite to eat at Garfunkles in Strand. We gorged ourselves on three courses of scrummy food, including these drool-worthy desserts! It was a fantastic day out, and I would recommend to everyone to go and see the show- there's not a person who wouldn't love it!

Have you seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? What's your favourite musical?

  3. One of the things I regret not doing while I was in London was not seeing a show, because DAMN, there are broadway posters EVERYWHERE. I would've loved to have seen this as the only musical I've ever been to was Hairspray back when I was like, 10 L O L. (AND HELLO OBVS I'D LOVE TO SEE WILLY WONKA)

Those desserts though, ugh, amazing *-*
