Eyebrow Microblading For Trichotillomania: One Year On

There are two beauty-related moments in my life that have completely changed my 19 year relationship with trichotillomania. The first was the discovery of false eyelashes aged 15; the second was having my eyebrows tattooed in January 2016 by Sian Dellar. It sounds sad, but these beauty epiphanies have completely changed my life for the better. Those of you who have trichotillomania might understand this; those moments that make you feel as though there is light within the murkiness of the disorder, that provides a glimpse of hope, that makes your life with hair loss tons easier. For me, microblading was one of these profound moments. I finally had brows. Not only that, but they were brows that looked completely natural and that I didn't have to worry about. One year down the line, they are still there (although much more faded) and as I look to my top up appointment, I've been thinking about the impact this procedure has had on my life.

Why Having My Eyebrows Tattooed Has Made My Trichotillomania Worse

You might know that earlier this year, I was lucky enough to have my eyebrows tattooed by the wonderful Sian Deller. It was one of the best beauty experiences of my life (if not the best), and have not regretted it since. After deliberating for ages and weighing up the pros and cons about a thousand times, the opportunity presented itself in January and I took the plunge. I haven’t looked back. Although I love every single thing about them, I did want to write this post just to open the discussion with other trichotillomania sufferers who have had their eyebrows tattooed or are thinking about getting them done. Since having them tattooed, my hair pulling has been severely aggravated. I pick and pull at my eyebrows so much more than I did before and am aware that it has happened to a few other trichsters as well. So, is it still worth getting your eyebrows tattooed?

My Life-Changing Experience With Eyebrow Tattooing: Creating Brows From Scratch With Sian Dellar

Before trichotillomania got hold of them, I never in the slightest comprehended just how important eyebrows would become to me. Many people don't even give a second thought to the two hairy slithers that sit above their eyes, but that completely changes when you are left without them. Imagine having no eyebrows at all, and imagine having to guess where to draw them (and draw them well) every single day. It's tiring, frustrating and incredibly time-consuming. You stare at your bald reflection and recoil at just how bizarre your face looks without them, paranoid that anyone who sees would immediately look at you with those same feelings of disgust. You try your best to hide behind your daily veil of make-up, but really you still believe that people are seeing through your dodgy-shaped and poorly-drawn disguise.
